General Information - Crop insurance for wine grapes
Wine grapes are insurable if the vines:
Have reached their fourth leaf after being planted or have reached their third leaf after grafting or bench grafting.
Have produced an average of at least two tons of grapes per acre in one of the last three years.
Producers must insure all acreage of a particular variety in each county. However, one variety can be insured and not another. (ex. a producer could insure all their Chardonnay and none of their Syrah)
Crop insurance coverage protects the wine grape grower for these perils:
Adverse weather conditions (ex. heat, wind, rain)
Fire (unless weeds , undergrowth and pruning debris have not been maintained or controlled)
Insects (excludes damage due to insufficient or improper application of pest control measures)
Plant disease(excludes damage due to insufficient or improper application of disease control measures)
Failure of the irrigation supply (if caused by an insured peril)
Coverage levels and pricing can be tailored to your vineyards needs:
Insurance coverage amounts are based on past production history and planted acres by variety
4-10 years of actual production history to calculate your average yield/acre per variety
Coverage levels can be selected between 50% to 85 % of your average yields and can vary by variety
The USDA provides varying levels of premium subsidies from 67% to 38% based on the coverage levels selected
RMA determines the indemnity pricing by variety for each Crush District based on district crush averages
Contract pricing options of up to twice the district average price for specific varieties is available
